Young Directors

Young Director’s Apprentice Programme

The King’s Head Theatre is committed to providing opportunities for young directors to increase their training and experience and develop their craft.

Since its creation in 1994 the King’s Head Theatre has supported six to ten directors every year at various stages of their career. In 2002 the Programme won the Queen’s Jubilee Award in recognition of its unique value, for contribution to the arts and the pursuit of excellence presented, by HM Queen Elizabeth II, Lord Attenborough and Richard Eyre.

The Young Director’s Apprentice Programme is aimed at directors who have demonstrated a talent and commitment to directing but may not have had experience in working at a building-based theatre. Through the programme the King’s Head offers support to emerging directors at a crucial, often transitional point in their career.

Successful candidates will have the opportunity to meet and work with some of the industries top professionals. In the past two years alone, young directors have had the opportunity to work with professionals including: Janie Dee, Mike Dixon, Anthony Drewe, Sally Lindsay, Maureen Lipman, Gillian Lynne, Kim Medcalf, Shane Richie, Frances Ruffelle and Toby Young.

Under the current artistic directorship of Stephanie Sinclaire, the programme has expanded to include producing and stage management skills, the running of an artistic venue and finally, if suitable, the creation of their own company. At the end of their apprenticeship the young directors are given the opportunity to direct their own weeklong lunchtime production open to the public. In 2008 we are initiating a series of master classes with industry professionals for our young directors.

Most of our directors have gone on to establish careers in the industry; many are continually working as directors. Several directors have gone on to become part of the infrastructure of the Kings Head, creating educational programmes as well as directing at the theatre and mentoring incoming trainees.

This is an unpaid, training position and whilst it is expected that candidates need to undertake other work in the six-month period, a serious commitment and focus to the theatre will be required.
